Independent v national service provider – What’s cheaper and why?

Reading Time: 3 mins

When it comes to choosing a service provider, there are plenty of options. Regardless of whether you are looking for a plumber, electrician, locksmith, window cleaner or a Home Removal Company, if you carry out a quick search online, you will find plenty of options. There will be individuals (otherwise known as a ‘man in a van’), small local businesses, regional service providers and larger nationwide service providers all offering their services at different prices.

You will need to decide whether you want to use a Local, Independent or a National Company. The majority of independent service providers will not travel and operate locally to where they live serving the local consumers. National Companies will either have employees located across the UK or who are willing to travel anywhere and everywhere, regardless of your location.

But which should you choose? You might instantly think opting for the bigger national provider is the better choice. After all, they will usually be able to respond quicker and rightly or wrongly, many people will think that the bigger business will provide a more experienced, reliable and professional service.

While there are certainly advantages to hiring a larger national service provider there are also unique benefits to opting for a local independent service provider. So, choosing between the two isn’t as simple as it may seem.

National Service Providers

National service providers like LaddersFree will definitely seem to run by the ethos that bigger is better but how true is this? They will almost always have move reviews and therefore you’ll be able to find out more about them before you hire them. Online reviews on websites including Trustpilot, Yell.com and Facebook can give you a good indication. This larger presence will also give them a bigger reputation and more credibility. It can be hard to find out much about local/ independent service providers before you actually talk to them and there usually isn’t a lot of information about them online to enable you to make an informed decision. The best Independent Service Providers are those that have come recommended by a friend or colleague.

Many national service providers offer an insurance backed guarantee for that extra peace of mind, something you generally will not find with smaller companies.

In some cases, a  national service provider will also be able to provide a more comprehensive service or additional complimentary services. For example, if you needed a Plumbing and Heating Engineer to carry out some specialist work like adding and moving a radiator this may require additional skills. With a National Company, they can call on different employees whereas with an Independent company whilst they may be more willing to help, they may not have the skill set to carry out that work.

Speed, efficiency, increased versatility and flexibility and a greater sense of quality assurance can make choosing the larger national service provider very tempting. However, smaller local service providers are not without their benefits.

Independent Service Providers

Independent service providers work very differently with a focus on a more personal service. It might seem like a small thing but it can make a big difference!

Many people prefer the closer, more friendly service that a local/ independent provider will offer. You’ll usually have continuity and be working with the same people rather than a different person each time. Contacting and talking to independent tradesmen can be much easier. They’ll be no going through call centres and most of the time you will be able to talk to the person who will be carrying out the work.

Your customer service experience (in most cases) will be a lot better. Whilst it may not mean anything to you, some people like to support local business. Indirectly, it means you are supporting the local economy and that can only be a good thing. Depending on the nature of the service provided, independent service providers usually offer a more innovative service. They are not so rigid and have to follow rules regulations and guidelines laid down by Head Office. They can make informed decisions as and when required delivering a better customer experience.

Local VS National Providers – Which Is Cheaper?

Unsurprisingly the price is going to be the overriding factor for many people when it comes to choosing a provider. But what is the cheaper option when it comes to local vs national service providers?

Local service providers will often be cheaper but this is offset by the increased risk that the work will not be carried out as expected because of the lower quality assurance and  reputation that comes and in some cases the lack of a guarantee with hiring a smaller local provider. National providers will often charge more because they have greater brand recognition and in most cases will offer an insurance backed guarantee.

So Which Is Best?

The answer is really all down to your opinion. For greater peace of mind, speed of service and a guarantee you need to choose a  national company.

However, the usually lower cost and more personal service of a local provider could easily be more important to other people.

So, don’t think of it as who is best, think about it as who meets your own individual preferences.
