How to ace the job application process

Reading Time: 2 mins

There’s a lot of competition when it comes to landing a job, which is why it’s important to get every detail of the application process correct. What’s more, with online technology, people from all over the world can apply for the same job with the hopes of relocating. You’re up against a lot of people with varying degrees of experience and skills, and while it may sound daunting, you shouldn’t lose hope.

Here is a guide on how to ace the job application process so that you can land the job of your dreams.

Research the company

Do your research. You need to know about the company you want to work for so that you can tailor your application to suit their business ethos. After all, you want to work for them for a reason, so stand out by researching their core values, how their business is progressing and how hiring you as part of their company can help them achieve their goals.

Don’t forget your network

You may know someone who works in the company you are applying for, and if that’s true, there is no harm in asking them for some advice on how you can stand out against the competition. They will have inside knowledge of the company culture, what they are looking for, and what it is like to work there. And you never know, you may not like what they have to say, which will save you from sending in your application. Look on LinkedIn and see if you have any mutual connections, and if you do, send them a friendly message.

Master your CV

This is the key to standing out and putting your best skills and qualities forward. Writing a CV is not easy for everyone, though. While you want to get everything out on the page, you need to remember not to go over the top and only include relevant experience and skills that’ll mean something to the company you’re applying for. There is no point in saying you have experience in accounting if you are applying for a role that is focused on copywriting and doesn’t require accounting experience.

Of course, there are many resources that can help you write the perfect CV for any job role you are applying for, so be sure to use them. The main points for you to remember, however, are to organize your CV so that you have your work experience in order and before your education (unless it is your first job, of course), and to include role-specific keywords.

You are interviewing the company

Don’t forget that this is a two-way street. If you are asked to attend an interview and have any questions, then be sure to ask them. You are looking for a particular place of work that is fulfilling for you, so making sure that they have the culture, salary and growth that you are after is vital. Compile a list of questions for the interview, but also be sure to have questions that you need answering when you are researching the company, too.
