Considering a car now you’ve learned to drive or are even learning to do so. Here are some of the best cheap cars for learners.

Ford Fiesta

While there are several reasons why the Ford Fiesta is considered Britain’s best-selling car, the two main ones are because it costs very little to run, and it’s a great, all-rounded vehicle.

The Ford Fiesta has several engine options, all of which are excellent for fuel-efficiency. And since they are designed to be kind to the environment, you should profit from low road tax. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol engine version is the UK’s best-selling unit. This is primarily because of the flexibility and power it has to offer for such an affordable vehicle.

The Ford Fiesta is available in several versions ranging from the luxurious Titanium line to the sportier ST-Line. The great thing about this Ford model is that all versions of the Fiesta come with Ford’s SYNC touchscreen infotainment system. You also get a heated windscreen, air-conditioning, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a variety of advanced safety systems.

Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris is one of the best, great-value used cars for newbie drivers. It’s a straightforward, easy to maintain, and more than capable of withstanding the test of time. Outstanding reliability, ease to drive, good ride quality, and a Euro NCAP five-star safety rating are some of the features that make the Yaris a much sought-after vehicle.

As a fuel-efficient vehicle, the Yaris is one of the most affordable cars to run. Its 1.0-litre engine allows it to fall into Insurance Group 3, effectively making it very cheap to insure. If you are looking to get a Yaris, be ready to fork out about £6,000 for a five-year used model that’s racked up a few thousand miles on the clock.

VW Polo

The VW Polo is one of the best first cars out there. It’s an attractive little machine that provides good mileage and practicality. It also looks attractive and has all of the solid build quality you’d expect with a VW.

If you’re looking for a VW Polo there is a wide selection to choose from, however something around the 7,000 mark should get you a nice used model. If interested, check out these VW finance deals.

Audi A3

Audi’s A3 Model is an excellent first car for anyone with a restricted budget but wants a reliable, yet affordable luxury car. The Audi A3 is a classy compact that boasts a stylish exterior and well-designed interior. Punchy to drive, beautifully-built and compact, the A3 is perfect for urban and city drivers.

If you do not mind getting a car that’s racked up a few miles on its clock, then consider getting a used 2014 A3 – used Audi A3s cost about £7,000. The good thing about this model is that it is surprisingly efficient, produces low CO2 emissions, and offers exceptional fuel economy. Furthermore, its insurance premiums are reasonably affordable.

Renault Clio

This fun supermini brims with style and comes with a host of desirable technologies. However, the most exciting thing about the Renault Clio is its efficient range of engines – which helps make it an affordable option.

All versions of the Clio come generously equipped with a variety of infotainment and safety features. Entry-level models even get cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity. In contrast, higher-spec models come equipped with features like a touchscreen infotainment system with inbuilt satnav, rear parking sensors, and air conditioning.

Irrespective of the engine version you get, be it a diesel or petrol engine, you should still be able to enjoy flexible power delivery and excellent fuel economy. The Clio’s 0.9-turbocharged petrol version is quite popular and can do up to 66 miles per gallon when driven well. If you travel a lot, consider the 1.5-litre diesel version, which is capable of doing up to an astonishing 88.3 miles per gallon.

SKODA Citigo

It isn’t surprising to see a SKODA model make the best cars for new drivers list. The SKODA Citigo isn’t exactly a newbie considering that it was launched back in 2011; along with two almost identical cars – the SEAT Mii and the Volkswagen UP!

Since then, the Citigo has gone on to win several awards including Car Buyer Awards “Best First Car” award in 2015.

The main reason why the Citigo triumphs over other vehicles in its category is because it came top of the table in Thatcham Research and Co-op Insurance’s list of safest used cars for new and young drivers.

The Citigo ticks all the boxes – It’s fun to drive, yet safe. It’s small but practical. And last but not least, it’s cheap to buy and run.

This means that the SKODA Citigo is cheap to insure as most, if not all, models easily fit into Insurance Group 1 or 2. This is a good thing – you want your first car to be in groups 1 through 3 as they are the cheapest.

Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa is amongst the most popular mini cars around and comes with everything new drivers look for in a stylish, compact package. The Corsa is a responsive, nifty, and dynamic small car that’s great for driving in cities or town centres and comes in some cool colours or looks well with car wrapping.

The Vauxhall Corsa is available in a variety of engine types and sizes for efficient driving and affordability – a brand new Corsa costs about £11,000. However, if you are looking to buy one that’s used, you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a 5-year old one with less than 49,000 miles on its clock for just under £5,000.

Its insurance costs are relatively low too.
